As cities worldwide are growing, transportation infrastructure will only be under more pressure. By 2030 it is estimated that 60% of the population will live in cities – up 50% from the level today. Since road capacity on the ground is almost maximized, it seems natural to consider utilizing the space above us. In collaboration with the Airbus Innovation team in Toulouse and their A^3 incubators in Silicon Valley, we helped design the future value chain and business model for an eco-system of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Out of A^3, Airbus’ internal incubator in Silicon Valley, a set of novel technologies has been invented to provide human-carrying self-piloted drones. Yet, since the technology is in direct competition with investments from UBER, Tesla and others, Airbus had to define a business model and go-to-market plan to strategically navigate the potential billion-dollar market.
We began by mapping the startup eco-system to understand the technology maturity and identify pockets of opportunities. This lead to the foundation upon which we designed a value chain and business models, focused around a go-to market strategy for “flying taxis”. On behalf of everyone at Vertical, we look forward to a future in which gravity will not hold back urban transportation.
